Fujairah often seems to be best known as the youngest of the
seven emirates, since it was part of Sharjah until 1952. However, there is a
lot more to the only emirate located entirely on the East Coast. A picturesque
area, it offers golden beaches bordered by the Gulf of Oman on one side and the
Hajar Mountains on the other. The town is a mix of old and new; worth visiting
in particular is the old fort, which is reportedly about 300 years old and
overlooks the atmospheric old town.
The emirate has started to actively encourage tourism by opening new hotels and
providing even more recreational facilities. Since Fujairah is close to the
mountains and many areas of natural beauty, it makes an excellent base from
which to explore the countryside and wadis, forts, waterfalls and even natural
hot springs.
